Section Seven – Kendra Bragg

Her hand on the tabletop is little more than a shadow. She doesn’t glance up when I place the glass beside her. Her mood has darkened, or perhaps she just needs sleep. I sit next to her, looking at everything but her.

“This is what happens,” she tells me and from the sound of her voice I know she’s still staring at the table. “My energy just bottoms out all at once, everything falls into itself and I have to lie down.”

“It’s okay,” I reply, feeling stupid for allowing her to apologize. “I’ve stayed too long.”

I feel Sophie nod.

And yet, neither of us make any motion toward the door. We sit together, Sophie’s breathing shallow, her body limp in the chair while I stare out the window, a strange quietness overlaying the chaos of emotion just below my surface.

It feels good to be in the same room with her, to know her at the other side of the table. I hold to that feeling above concern and guilt, when it comes, holding to our easy exchange and the way we found each other again, after so many years. And when it begins to slip away, giving itself up to the riot of emotions so near, that’s when I know it’s time to leave.
