Everything is in flux and the old structures are crumbling. Perhaps Antonya Beck saw it coming. Years before, she established a community in Northern Virginia for spiritual practice. Only now, her best students and Beck herself have vanished into the chaos of the world.

Mariel, Beck’s protégé. Willful, determined, enigmatic. She’s waiting for something, and only she knows what it might be.

Will, searching for Mariel because he doesn’t know what else to do. When he finds her, his life isn’t made simpler.

Luke, holding a place for her in the abandoned house he’s commandeered in North Carolina. He doesn’t understand the spiritual stuff, but he knows she has a vision, and that’s enough.

Caleb, sent by the community to bring Mariel back into the fold. They’ve given him a gun, but he’s not sure how he’s supposed to use it.

Antonya Beck had said: You need to put what you say you believe in the way of your life. It must become the one obstacle to every action.

In times of crisis, what do we believe in? Where do we place our faith?  For Luke, it’s family; for Caleb, history.  Will needs a hero but Mariel, well, she’s making it up as she goes along.
