In 2016, Steve Mitchell and Deonna Kelli Sayed worked with editor Jeff Sykes to create Out in the South for Yes!Weekly. The five-part series interviewed LGBTQ+ people who had grown up in the South over five generations.
The series consisted of a print article by Steve, a podcast by Deonna, and a short video trailer.
Out in the South won the Association of Alternative Media’s 2017 Award for Best LGBT Coverage and the First Place North Carolina Press Association award for Best Mutlimedia Project.
